Remodelers Who Like Old Houses

Sancd is a kitchen remodeling company in Riverside, California. We work across the whole city, but the jobs we are best suited to are in older houses: the craftsman bungalows of the Wood Streets, the Spanish revival homes near Mount Rubidoux, and the pre-war cottages scattered through the downtown historic districts.

Those houses need a different approach from a tract home. A kitchen built in 1922 was sized for an icebox and a wood or gas stove, with a pantry doing the job a wall of upper cabinets does today. It usually shares plumbing with a service porch, has a window placed for light rather than for a sink, and sits on a raised wood floor over a crawlspace. Change one thing and three others move with it.

How We Approach a Remodel

We start by deciding what the house is telling us to keep. Trim profiles, door casings, original windows, a glass front cupboard, a cooler cabinet on the north wall. Those go on a written list before demolition so they are protected, removed carefully and put back.

Then we deal with what is simply worn out. Galvanized pipe, rusted cast iron, overloaded circuits, sagging floor framing under the old sink. We would rather tell you about those at the first visit than surprise you with them later.

The new work is built to match the old. Our cabinets are face frame with inset doors because that is how craftsman built ins were made, and the finish carpentry is milled to the profiles already in your dining room or hallway.

What We Will Not Do

We will not sell you a full gut when a careful restoration and new counters would do the job. We will not recommend moving the sink across the room unless the layout genuinely needs it, because relocating drains in an old house is expensive. And we will not claim a design is historically correct when it is just a style we like.
